This book explores the literary production of juvenile fiction in postwar Taiwan. With attention to a wider social, historical, and (cross)cultural context, the book discusses the diverse and contested textual representations of juvenile subjects. Among the topics dealt with are the textual discourse of “good boys” of the 1960s and its ambivalent social and cultural implications, the discourse of childhood innocence as a “radical” gesture and remedy to (re)negotiate with the past as well as to (re)imagine the present, the discourse of place and identity in the award-winning novels of the 1970s, at a time when Taiwan was in face of diplomatic setbacks and political disturbances, and the cross-cultural production of juvenile fiction in diary form and its imagination of (post)modern childhood at the turn of the millennium.
